One indispensable component to every Mid-Autumn Festival are mooncakes. Considered a festival that pays respect to the Chinese Goddess of the Moon, mooncakes have become a popular delicacy that many look forward to. However, what’s hiding behind that deliciousness is the high amount of calories! Let’s take a look at how you can eat mooncakes while reducing levels of fat in the blood.

1. Portion your mooncakes out for each day

As mooncakes’ main ingredients consist of flour, sugar, oil, syrup and various sweet flavored fillings, 1 mooncake (166 grams) can contain up to 600+ kilocalories of energy exceeding that of a normal dish such as pork knuckle stew or shrimp Pad Thai. Therefore, cutting the mooncake up into smaller pieces, and consuming an appropriate amount per day is beneficial for the health, and helps to control levels of fat in the blood.

2. Different mooncakes have different amounts of calories

If you would like to eat mooncakes but also want to control the levels of fat in the blood while also taking care of you health, in addition to portioning your mooncakes, opting for a mooncake filling with fewer calories can also help control the amount of fat in your body as follows:

  • Five Nuts Mooncake (Ngow-Ying): 722 kilocalories
  • Lotus Seed and Salted Egg Mooncake: 677 kilocalories
  • Durian and Salted Egg Mooncake: 673 kilocalories
  • Lotus Seed Mooncake: 646 kilocalories
  • Monthong Durian Mooncake: 640 kilocalories
  • Jujube Mooncake: 577 kilocalories

3. Reduce consumption of snacks and other drinks

If you have already decided on having that mooncake no matter what, then you should reduce your consumption of other sweets or high-energy foods to help reduce levels of fat in the blood, or avoid accumulating excess energy for the body. Consumption should be within the appropriate range of your body’s metabolism. Alternatively, you can also increase the amount of exercise you do to accelerate the body in burning off excess calories in order to reduce the accumulation of excess fats or levels of fat in the blood.

In addition to reducing levels of fat in the blood with the mentioned tips and tricks to consuming mooncakes, there are currently other healthcare methods to control levels of fat in the blood via the ALA Alpha lipoic acid vitamin IV drip. This is a vitamin that helps to fight free radicals (antioxidants) and L-carnitine (fat burn) which affect levels of fat in the blood.
